Daffodils are appearing in Cornwall. I found these at a nearby produce stand in Norris Green--one of the villages that make up our "hamlet." Like many, this stand consists of a covered wooden platform at the end of the owners' driveway. Prices are as marked and payment goes in the can. It's an honor system that is common around here. This one had eggs and flowers for sale. Many offer vegetables as well. Eggs are sold by the 1/2 dozen, are free range, and usually cost 1 pound 20 pence (about $2). The daffodils were 1 pound (approximately $1.60) a bunch (about 8 stems); the vegetables (potatoes, leeks, broccoli, cauliflower, swede) are priced by the piece or bunch and sold for pence. It is fun and satisfying to buy from these stands--knowing that we are supporting a neighbor and/or a local gardener. I have learned recently that this area of Cornwall is famous for its daffodils. Historically, the Tamar River Valley was the leader growing and distributing daffodils--bulbs and blooms--for all of England. Consequently, there are daffodils coming up everywhere around here--in fields, in the hedgerows, in gardens, and in containers at most cottages. It's exciting to imagine what it will look like around here in a few weeks. Stay tuned for pictures.
Lovely!!
